Professional Development Workshops

Faculty Affairs in the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor has developed a series of professional development workshops that departments, centers, units, and colleges can request to be presented at meetings, retreats, and for professional development training. The workshops range in time from 30 to 90 minutes and all can be tailored to your unit’s specific needs. To request one of the following workshops please email facultyaffairs@unl.edu.

Freedom of Speech and Academic Freedom

This 60-90 minute workshop will provide participants with an understanding of First Amendment rights and campus speech, academic freedom, AAUP definitions and principles, and will review some of UNL’s bylaws and policies on campus speech.

Facilitating Civil Discourse in Learning Spaces

This 60 minute workshop will help participants model and promote respectful dialogue, identify effective strategies for teaching civil discourse in learning spaces, and implement and apply the "Anchor Reveal Encourage" method of facilitating respectful dialogue.

RU RDY? Your Digital Footprint in Academia

This 30-60 minute workshop will provide participants with the pros and cons of using social media—personally and professionally; help participants think about digital boundaries between personal and professional online behavior; provide ideas for using social media as a teaching tool; understand the different social media platforms that millennials and Gen Z’s are using; and maximize academic visibility via online tools.

Negotiation skills in Academia

This 60 minute workshop will help participants learn strategies to become a better negotiator, understand diversity factors that influence negotiation abilities, consider negotiation across the academic life cycle, and understand that negotiating is a daily habit.

Workplace Bullying in Academia

This 60 minute workshop will help participants learn about the complexity of bullying across the lifespan, identify workplace bullying, understand what workplace bullying looks like in academia, and understand research-based strategies for responding to workplace bullying.

Leading with Compassion

This 60 minute workshop is designed for campus leaders who want to learn more about leading with compassion. Participants will learn about the principles of compassion, consider potential barriers to compassion, apply compassion principles to academia, and create their own blueprint for compassion at work.

Teaching with Compassion

This 60 minute workshop is designed for faculty who want to learn more about teaching with compassion. Participants will learn about the principles of compassion, consider potential barriers to compassion, apply compassion principles to their teaching, and create their own blueprint for compassion in the classroom.

Campus Workshops

Accessibility and Universal Design for Learning

This self-paced 60 minute workshop will help faculty design course materials in ways that everyone can use them, including students using assistive technology like a screen reader. The Center for Transformative Teaching shares resources on the Universal Design for Learning framework along with instructions for increasing accessibility in digital programs (Microsoft Office and Canvas), file types, and videos.
